General synopsis: Chinatown Frankie P, also called Cobra Verde, or the Green Snake, is a member of a Chinatown crime family run by Fats Mondia. The family seeks to survive, to move its foothold into the 21st century. They do this by secretly going to work for the United States Government. The gang's mission is to fund global terrorism. The theory is that by funding terrorism you can then monitor it, stay on top of it so to speak, make spectacular arrests showing that progress in the war on terror is being made, especially driving up the approval ratings of the Great Leader of 2000. Fats, Frankie P, and the rest of the Chinatown gang, soon discover that terrorism is an emerging growth market, dwarfing profits from both gambling and prostitution. The money to be made from oil speculation alone is stunning. In most writing and cinema, past and present, a common central theme is for the main character to set himself free in some manner. Usually it is to move from a state of mass mind into a state of individuality, that is, from the collective to the singular. This is where Chinatown Frankie P is different. Throughout most of the work, he strives to shed individuality and to enter mass mind, to disguise himself in it. He gets everything backwards. At one point, Frankie P is proud to have transformed himself from an aging dinosaur into a mass-minded man, a man of the present. Ultimately, however, he can never quite shed his Chinatown mentality. |
